Bronze Acanthus Leaf and Granite Headstone
What you are looking at is a traditional granite headstone. Recessed into this granite headstone is a bronze acanthus leaf and rosette.
To create this leaf, the original parts were hand forged with steel. Hand forging means forming hot metal parts into shape with a hammer and anvil.
Actually, there were two leaves and two rosettes forged. The second pair of each, were made a little larger and layered behind the original set. The layering gives the metalwork more visual (and actual) depth.
Once the forged steel was completed, it was sent off to a foundry where it was reproduced in statuary bronze.
The finished bronze comes with a saddle brown/grey finish which will turn green with time
